Series name: Life is Strange
Canon notes: Original universe, coming from Episode 4: Dark Room. Specifically, right after leaving the first major decision point - basically when everything big is wrapped up before any of the major reveals of the episode.

Species: Humany human

History: Max’s personal history and basic game path. However! Since Life is Strange is a game ALL ABOUT CHOICES I kind of feel like I need to outline which particular set of choices my version of Max will have chosen. So I apologize for the following length on top of the link:

-After saving a girl (Chloe) from Nathan Prescott, who had a gun, Max chose to REPORT NATHAN to the principal.
-After Victoria, a girl who bullied Max, was splattered with paint, Max chose to COMFORT VICTORIA. (She did this after first choosing to MAKE FUN OF VICTORIA, but then felt bad and rewound time.)
-When the security guard was hassling Kate Marsh, she chose to INTERVENE AND HELP KATE.
-When she was hiding in Chloe’s room and Chloe was being harassed by her step-father (the security guard ironically,) she chose to COME OUT OF HIDING AND TAKE THE BLAME. (Originally, she remained hidden, but rewound time after that choice led to Chloe’s step-father physically hitting Chloe.)
-When Kate confided in her the horrible things Nathan did to her at the party, Max told her to WAIT FOR PROOF instead of going to the police.
-When Warren asked her to the movies she TURNED HIS ASS DOWN.
-When Kate called later, she ANSWERED THE CALL, even though it made Chloe mad. (It helped saved Kate’s life later though.)
-When Frank, a drug dealer, was getting violent on Chloe, Max DIDN’T TRY TO SHOOT HIM with a gun. (This was a rewind – she originally tried to shoot him, but the gun was out of bullets and that really pissed him off instead. So she rewound time and didn’t shoot him instead.)
-When Kate tried committing suicide, Max was able to SAVE KATE’S LIFE.
-When questioned about the incident, she BLAMED NATHAN, resulting in his expulsion.
-When Chloe tried stealing the school’s handicap fund, Max convinced her NOT TO STEAL THE MONEY.
-She KISSED CHLOE ;)
-When Chloe got into an argument with her step-father, she SIDED WITH CHLOE, resulting in the step-father being kicked out of the house.
-When breaking into an RV, they needed to get past a guard dog; Max managed it WITHOUT HURTING THE DOG.
-(Episode 4 spoilers here - highlight) When alternate!Chloe asks Max to help with her assisted suicide, she REFUSED.
-For smaller decisions, assume Max helped whoever she could :’)

Personality: Max is, at heart, a shy and timid girl, at least when she's not with friends. She prefers to keep people and scenarios at a distance – or watch them through a camera lens. However, this has BEGUN to change ever since she gained her powers to rewind time and began investigating the disappearance of Rachel Amber. Since she can often find the exact right thing to say (through trial and error and rewinding time,) and she’s forced to interact in order to investigate, she has become slightly more outgoing. And with that, she’s gained the respect of most of the people who used to find her weird or awkward. At her core, she still is shy and awkward, but she’s learned to “fake it ‘til you make it” as it were.

Despite that nature, she’s also fierce when it comes to doing the right thing. When push comes to shove, Max is usually able to shove back. And she isn’t afraid to, not when it’s something important. Okay, she might be AFRAID, but she’ll do it anyway. To Max, some things are just too important to roll over and accept. Like when she sees the school security guard harassing her friend Kate, she stands up for what’s right. She thinks about people and tries to do right by them, and she can’t stand to see people hurting.

Max can be somewhat indecisive and a bit of a pushover otherwise, though. It’s easy to talk her into things she doesn’t want to do or make bad decisions, like when Chloe convinces her that shooting guns after drinking is totally a good plan. “Peer pressure” is a very real threat. And even when making her own decisions, she often second-guesses herself, wondering if she did the right thing. The past few days while she’s been able to remake any important decisions have served to highlight that in her own mind. But she’s also realizing that a part of growing up is learning to accept your decisions and their consequences.

One other thing to note about Max is that she is horribly curious by nature. More than curious, she’s full-on nosy. While this can be useful to both a photographer, as she plans to be, and to an investigator, as she has found herself being, she also realizes herself that she can push this too far. It’s gotten even worse since she gained her powers, since she can snoop through people’s belongings then rewind time to avoid the consequences. Even she realizes she takes it too far, but that still doesn’t stop her. She describes these snooping sessions as "fascinating, but terribly wrong." (To be fair, she is the protagonist of an adventure game. Bread and butter of the genre.)

Another, less important to her overall personality but still noteworthy, is that Max can be both pretentious and nerdy. She listens to indie music, refuses to move away from analog cameras, and is called both “hipster” and “pretentious” by her peers, and she owns up to those labels. She also plays World of Warcraft, watches anime and cult classic television shows, quotes cheesy movies, and one of her nicknames is even “Mad Max,” after the movies. She is comfortable with the title of “nerd” as well. Sometimes, though, she tries to act “cool,” or maybe “punk,” but it comes off as stilted and horribly UN-cool.

Her true passion, though, is for photography. Ever since she got her first instant camera as a kid, she’s been busy snapping pictures of anything and everything. As a kid, she would fantasize about being a great adventurer-slash-photographer, travelling the world with her BFF and taking amazing photographs of their adventures. As she grew older, it developed into a full-fledged passion. She admires the works of famous photographers such as Julia Hamilton, Salvador Dali (yes he did photographs too,) Robert Doisneau, and Blackwell instructor Mark Jefferson, and uses them as inspiration for her own photography. And now she attends Blackwell Academy under a full scholarship for photography, studying under Mr. Jefferson.

Overall, Max is a bright girl; curious and brave, but also insecure and timid. She’s transitioning from childhood to adulthood, and all of the responsibilities that entails, and although she might be frightened, she tries to face challenges head-on.

Abilities: Max is attending a prestigious photography program on a full scholarship and her work is praised by the most skilled of her classmates and her famous photographer teacher, so we can assume her photography is really damn good.

Oh, and she can rewind time.

That time rewind works independently of her body – in other words, it moves backwards around her, but she doesn’t move to match. (She can, for example, break down a door, go into the formerly-locked room, then rewind time so the door is fixed and whole with her still inside.) Objects she has on her come with her (disappearing from their former position if she rewinds to before she picked up the object.)

This power only works for short amounts of time – a few minutes, tops – and doesn’t work if she tries to go past a time she was asleep or otherwise out of it. In addition, using it too often can result in physical pain, nosebleeds, and eventually will keep her from using her powers for a period. (Presumably, overusing it a lot can lead to brain damage. That’s just a theory, though.)

She also has the ability to do a mental timejump by using photographs – if she’s in a photograph, she can jump backwards in time into the ‘her’ of that time. She can only stay within a certain area, but the choices she makes there still affect the future, and will create an alternate timeline spiraling from the decisions she makes in the past.

I intend to cut her picture timejumping power out completely. Her regular time rewind will only work with player permission, or mod permission in event of something like her trying to go back and warn about plotty stuff or some such.

Lastly, she’s shown to have visions (or perhaps time travel) to a singular event in the future – the storm that wipes out Arcadia Bay. It’s unknown if that’s something to do with her powers or if there’s another supernatural cause, if it’s tied directly to the storm or if her seeing the storm is coincidence. Either way, it probably won’t be making an appearance in game.

Augment Skillset: Personnel support – her room will be a dark room / photography room / gallery.

[ The video feed turns on to show Max Caulfield, photographer extraordinaire. She’s fiddling with a camera – an old, outdated (severely outdated now that they’re in space) analog piece. The alien planet of the month can be seen behind her. ]

I still can’t believe I’m on reality TV. Sci-fi reality TV! It’s like they took something I hate – that’d be the reality TV – and something I love, the sci-fi, mixed them together, then threw me here. I do kind of think the sci-fi parts make it cool, but it’d be a lot cooler if my friends back home could tune in. Trust me, if this was a show back on Earth, we would all have been watching it.

Honestly, I don’t know why they’d bother bringing me here. My ratings must be shit. Am I allowed to say that on air? I’m a big enough person to admit that I’m super boring to watch. I’m not really exciting, and my only skills are with a camera. Everybody else can do all of this crazy stuff, and here I am, taking pictures. Really exciting material, right?

But even if it’s boring for viewers, I have to say that all of these places we visit DO give some amazing shots. We just landed here, but I’ve already used nabbed, like, a dozen great photos. Do you guys think they’ll let me take these back with me? It’d blow my friends’ minds.

I am running into a small problem with taking all of these great photos, though. Namely, uh, where am I supposed to pick up more film? This stuff’s hard enough to find back on Earth nowadays, let alone on... Vulcan or whatever. Everything’s digital, y’know?

Sorry for talking your ears off. Give me a holla’ if you’ve got something to say! [ She tried to sound hip there, but it probably came off as stilted. ] Max, signing off.
