[Chloe was not adjusting well to sleeping on a spaceship. Putting aside the fact that she had to sleep in the medbay, there was just...noise all the time. Humming of machinery, the sounds of distant people. The first few nights she had just been too tired not to sleep, but now she found herself just...laying there. At two am. Completely failing to sleep.]

[Which was why she finally dug out her communicator, setting it on her pillow before she tapped it to call Max's number.]

...Hey Max, you awake?

[ Sleep? What is sleep?

Max is burning the midnight oil in her office, setting up some new photos on her wall. Her communicator tells her she has a call, so she's pretty quick in answering. ]

Uh, yeah. Just getting some stuff done.

What's up, Chloe?

[Oh good, she hadn't woken her up. There's the sound of rustling as Chloe adjusts a bit on her bed.]

Nothing. Just.

Laying here wishing for sleep and gettin' nothing.

Really? You mean to tell me you're holed up in a med lab, trying to sleep, and you haven't hit up the sleeping pills yet?

[ A bit teasing, a bit suggestion. ]

[Chloe groans.]

Thinkin' about it. I'm just used to...you know.

Having a bit of a...relaxation moment before I try to sleep.

[She means pot, max.]

Before you sleep, too? I thought that was your waking-up ritual.

What, it can't be both?

I suppose there aren't any rules against that.

[ A pause. ]

...So I take it that you're running low. [ She can't imagine it's easy to restock. ]

You could put it that way.

I've got...enough for a little while. Haven't really been touching it.

Only had one since I got here.

[Her life is hard.]

Must be tough. [ Stopping practically cold-turkey. ]

That's a good call, though. Making it last.

Yeah. Might have some long-term plans for fixing the problem too.

[She's still figuring that bit out in her head though.]

...Anyway, why are you up? Not that I'm complaining but.

[ "Some long-term plans" huh? Still, Chloe changed the subject, so she'll let that drop. Chloe'll let her in on her plans when she's ready. ]

It's not that late. [ Max has stayed up way later binge-watching TV shows or playing WoW. ] But I'm rearranging the photos on my wall, adding up some new ones.

[And she will when she has it more hammered out for herself.]

Photos, huh? From your time here in the fleet? Or from back home?

Okay, mostly column A. I don't actually have a lot of pictures from back home to put up. [ She's a little bummed out about that, but. She probably has more than other fleet members, so she can't complain too much. ]

Yeah. I don't have much from home either. Just what's on my phone.

[More shifting about.]

Tell me about one of them?

All right, I can do that.

[ Max looks over her pictures, silent for a moment before she picks out the picture with the most interesting story. ]

All right, here's one. Just a bit before you showed up, I was visiting another ship. That ship had these little... well, like roombas, but sci-fi.

One of them was sparking. Exposed wires, maybe ready to explode violently. [ An exaggeration, but don't call her out on it okay. ] One of the ship's maintenance or engineering officers was trying to fix it with a screwdriver, but the little thing was fighting back.

I snapped a picture of that moment. Machine versus master, fighting back against perceived injustice when all they actually wanted to do was help. It's a great piece.

[Chloe listens quietly, then there's a pause, then a laugh.]

How does a roomba fight back? Did it menacingly vacuum his shoes?

It had these little, like, arms? And it could grab you. Or spray you with cleaning chemicals.

I ended up coming to the rescue, actually.

That is...creepy.

Oh? Supermax saves the day again?
